Nederlandse uitleg

Since printing a 3D gun is right now a hot topic and a lots of people go nuts if they hear that 'everyone can print a gun now' please read the whole artikel before yelling that it should forbidden etc.

Disclaimers

  • I am not a gun nut, i find it scary things and crazy how the USA handle the gun laws.
  • Check your own local laws BEFORE printing any part of the Liberator-tje.

What

The liberator is a gun designed by Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed. In his opinion every USA citizen should be free to own a gun hence he put the the design on his site. The US government considers putting the files online as export, which is forbidden by law. They only forget that once something is online it's VERY hard to remove this, check e.g. Pirate Bay.

In the Netherlands any gun is strictly forbidden unless you have a licence. To prevent any problems with dutch law I (zeno4ever/Dave Borghuis) modified the files so its impossible to shoot any bullet with the printed gun. I checked this with someone that has some insight in Dutch law regarding gun laws and the modifications I made should make it legal to print the gun in Netherlands. Be sure to check your own local laws if you want to print this Liberator-tje.

My changes to the Liberator files are:

  • I closed the barrel, so there is no way to put a bullet inside the printed gun
  • The hole for the firing pin is removed from the hammer.
  • Scale the files (1 unit was in wierd inch like standard) to make it suitable for RepRap printers.
  • Change orientation of certain objects to make it more easy to print on RepRap like printers.
  • Fixed some files of errors.

Todo:

  • Redesign the trigger spring.

So what i have now is a very elaborate toy 'klapper' (toy caps) pistol ;-)

Why

As stated in the disclaimer I am not a fan of any gun, but i find the discussion what should be online and what you can do with a 3D printer very interesting. So thats why I printed a modified Liberator to showcase how silly it is to forbid to print certain files or remove files from the internet.

Steps

  • Download file here
  • print the files (of course)
  • all the pins were to small to print so find some other material such as short nails or similar
  • I had to sand down most parts to make it fit. I am not sure if this is a printer setting or something else.
  • assemble the gun according the readme
  • have fun !

Demonstrations and in the Media

The Liberator-tje is in popular demand and you can/could see the gun at the following places:

If you want to show the Liberator-tje please contact Dave for the options. Feel free to print the gun yourself, I would appreciate that you drop an email to keep me posted.
